The 1997 season sees the birth of an exciting new national motor racing series called the Polo Cup. For the first time in South Africa there will be a one make saloon car series with 30 identical cars taking to the grid each race. The aim of the series is to declare an overall points winner at the end of the 1997 season. The cars will be the same right down to the brake pads and with the engines being sealed by VW to stop any form of modification, it will be very much a drivers championship.
The Polo Cup series will compete on the national circuit with the season consisting of 11 races country wide. Polo Cup will always appear on the bill alongside at least 1 other major national series at each event. Due to the one make well controlled nature of the series with no modifications allowed, the cars can be run on much smaller budgets than other national classes.
